RESPONSE TO KIPS LECTURE
I really enjoyed the very first lecture of Art 7a Spring 2011. Kip is so enthusiastic and I can tell he is very passionate about art and teaching. I'm looking forward to creating, evaluating, participating, and experiencing art and life. It was interesting to me how we subconsciously recognize iconic images. We watched a video and viewed some images, and it was so interesting how many specific instances I related them to things I have seen before in the past. Kip keeps lecture exciting and full of useful information. I can't wait to see how this quarter will unfold. I also thought Kip’s story of his first art class was classic. He explained how the class critiqued a pile of trash in the corner of the room, when they thought one of their peers had created it. The point of the story is how can we decipher what is art? As Eleanor Antin once described art as, “Making meaning happen.” I also learned a new word during lecture, synecdoche: A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole, the whole for a part, the specific for the general, the general for the specific, or the material for the thing made from it. I think for this class the understanding of the meaning of a piece of artwork is going to be crucial.
