READING RESPONSE INTRO
The introduction to the reader explains five different artist's perspectives on art. Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg, and Merce Cunningham all have some similar and different points of view of what makes art, art. One of the most interesting parts in the introduction I found was, "Why worry about art when life is what matters? [Tinguely says] I can assure you, that once you get rid of the notion of art you acquire great many wonderful new freedoms" (Reader, p. 7). I like this statement because I find people and artists get so caught up only in thinking art is just about the mediums and technique. Art is so much more than actually producing it, but also relating artwork to life and the lessons one learns through experiences. The introduction also talked about how to get past 'one's own self-expressed taste' by using certain methods, such as chance and motion. Those five artists actually share these methods by experiencing them without interpretation. The introduction also touches on repetition and how hard it is to resist the temptation and stay original. I am really excited to learn about all five artists.
