READING RESPONSE MCCLOUD CH. 1 & 2

Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics The Invisible Art describes comics, the basic elements of comics, and how the mind processes the language of comics. McCloud has been having a hard time to find a clear definition of comics, he ended up coming up with "Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer" (Reader, p. 20). Comic strips started with "Menna" an ancient Egyptian scribe. It was considered a comic because for the longest time no one knew how to read it, but finally someone in MExico figured out they write their comics zig-zag. The father of the modern comic according to McCloud is Rodolphe Topffer from the mid- 1800s. The definition of comics is still in flux, but one will just have to keep up with the advancement and the new vocabulary that is related it this type of artwork. Also there is a lot of specific vocabulary that is connected to comics, such as stating this is not a ..... or icons. Character's facial expressions are also important in the creation of comics. It seems like comic artwork is a whole different ball game.
